Aichryson

Aichryson

This plant is often found on our windowsills, but still some people cannot tame it and turn it into a beautiful lush bush. For the successful cultivation of aichryson at home, you need to know its features, as well as the basic rules of indoor care and agricultural technology.

This flower has many other names: a tree of love and happiness, a tree of lovers, a love tree, a family tree, a flower of love – all these names show how important flower growers put into the state of aichryson and how important it is for people that it develops, and not wither.

Description

The tree of happiness looks like a typical representative of succulents or the Crassulaceae family. This plant in the wild exists in harsh conditions – it can be placed in rock crevices, on very poor soils, is able to endure droughts and develop with a strong nutrient deficiency. The birthplace of the flower is the Canary and Azores, certain regions of Portugal, Morocco and Madeira.

There are 15 species in the genus, some of them are closer to herbaceous plants, while others grow into powerful semi-shrubs of medium size. The shoots are almost never completely woody, but old specimens resemble trees with a lush crown.

For the most part, these are perennials, although it all depends on the climate. Rapid growth is characteristic, therefore, even in one season, aichryson has time to grow significantly. The leaves are arranged oppositely, vaguely reminiscent of hearts in shape, for which people awarded the flower with many romantic names. The color of the foliage of the tree of love can be all shades of green, and new varieties are distinguished by the presence of a variegated color interspersed with yellow, gray, white and even red. Most species have villi on the surface, which give the effect of fluffiness.

The botanical name comes from the Greek language and in translation means “forever yellow”. This is due to the bright flowering that occurs annually in the second half of spring. After flowering, the leaf rosette, on which the peduncle was, dies off. In addition to yellow coloring, there are white, beige and pink varieties.

aichryson contains glycosides in vegetable juice. If swallowed, it can cause poisoning in small children and pets. Contact with juice on the skin is also dangerous – burns and local reactions may occur.

When grown indoors, a crown is most often formed in the form of a small standard tree. This culture is actively used to form indoor bonsai. If the care is correct, flowering is long and abundant, sometimes more than six months.

Varieties

Among the 15 species of this flower in garden stores are those that are most suitable for home cultivation. The most common types of aichryson:

  • Home (Aichryson domesticum). A compact hybrid with a spherical dense crown has gained great popularity among flower growers. There is a whitish pubescence on the foliage. It blooms profusely and at the same time exudes a pleasant aroma.
  • Stonecrop (Aichryson sedifolium). A characteristic feature is shortened shoots. This makes it suitable for growing on alpine hills and rockeries, as well as for desert compositions. The crown looks exotic: the leaves resemble long grapes tightly pressed to each other, which are covered with a sticky coating. There are scarlet stains on their upper ends.
  • Prostrate or Laxum (Aichryson laxum). A very unusual form with a tree-like crown, consisting of upright branches. Flowering shoots protrude high above the foliage. One of the advantages is a long flowering period. This takes so much energy from the plant that by the end there is a leaf fall, but in a few months the foliage is gradually restored.
  • Point (Aichryson punctatum). Stems with a reddish tinge, and bright green leaf plates grow on them. Very small buds remain open for a long time.
  • Sinuous (Aichryson tortuosum). A plant with a spherical crown of small size. The leaves sit on short petioles, very dense villi. The flowers are not yellow, as in most species, but beige, but they do not wither until six months.
  • Gucci (Aichryson goochiae). The most suitable variety for the formation of bonsai. Branching is activated by constant pinching of the tips so that the crown becomes denser. The leaves are rounded with a slight depression towards the middle of the plate.
  • Variegated ( Aichryson Variegata). Highly ornamental variety with variegated coloring, which is achieved through white or light yellow areas. On young branches, variability is more pronounced, and on old shoots it is barely distinguishable. To achieve the maximum decorative effect, it is important to keep in places with good lighting.

All varieties and types are compact and hardy. The principles of indoor care for them and growing them are almost the same.

Care rules

Aichryson is an indoor flower, the closest relative of which is a money tree, and caring for them is similar in many ways. They are both very unpretentious, do not require too much time and care, but if they are not provided with the necessary conditions, they will slowly wither away.

Lighting

One of the main rules of growing is good lighting. In this case, there should be no direct rays of the sun, as burns will appear on the leaves. In extreme cases, the flower may even die. To diffuse the light, you can use a gauze curtain or a translucent sun sticker.

The ideal solution would be to place a tree of love on the east windows, here this houseplant always feels great. The orientation of the pot must be changed frequently, otherwise the crown will be deformed, and the side facing the room will remain practically without leaves. It is recommended to turn 90°C every 2 weeks.

Temperature

The optimum temperature for the normal well-being of aichryson during cultivation is 20-25 ° C, but due to its exceptional viability, it easily tolerates higher temperatures. For the summer, the pot can be taken out into the yard or into the garden. In the southern regions, it develops normally even at 40 ° C, but the growth rate at the same time stops, and the buds can even partially fall off.

In winter, a cooler content is needed. Lowering the temperature should ideally be in parallel with the decrease in daylight hours, but in practice this is difficult to achieve, so it is recommended to simply put it in a cooler place from November to early April.

Watering

aichryson care is facilitated by the fact that it easily tolerates the lack of watering. Moreover, the flower itself will help the novice grower to navigate, because with a lack of moisture, its foliage loses turgor and becomes lethargic, and at a normal level, the leaf blades are elastic and rigid. It is best to water in small portions, because after overflowing the root system may begin to rot. The frequency primarily depends on the air temperature: the hotter, the faster the soil dries.

For irrigation, warm water is required (a couple of degrees above room temperature). It is desirable if it is softened. Lower watering – in a pan – is not suitable for a tree of happiness, this plant is watered only in a pot.

In winter, with a cool content, the frequency of watering is reduced. Once every 3-4 weeks is enough, but first of all, when growing, you need to focus on how slowly the substrate dries out.

Humidity

aichryson does not need sprays and air humidifiers. Moreover, drops can leave white marks on the foliage, which is bad for decorative effect. But on the other hand, in the warm season, the flower responds very well to showering with warm water. This procedure during cultivation awakens dormant buds and helps to make the shoots more branched. In winter, bathing is suspended so as not to activate the development of fungi.

Crown molding

To form a beautiful crown, proper pruning is necessary, without which the tree of happiness will look sloppy. First of all, all damaged, dried shoots and branches with signs of fungal infection, spots, etc. are removed to the base. In addition, in spring and autumn, the tops of the shoots are plucked a few centimeters.

To form bonsai or standard trees, all lower branches are removed during cultivation.

Fertilizer

At home, aichryson should be fertilized with caution – like all succulents, the love tree does not respond well to complexes with a high nitrogen content. It is best to use fertilizer for cacti when growing. It is used once every half a month, but before applying the substrate must be moistened.

Top dressing is needed during the period of active growth – from spring to autumn. For the cold period, the introduction of complexes is stopped. If the goal is a standard form or bonsai, you can periodically water the plant with the Athlete preparation, which helps to increase the diameter of the main trunk.

Fertilizers are carried out “under” the root, like regular watering, or “on the leaf” – by spraying. The first method is better suited for this culture.

Transfer

aichryson does not need frequent transplantation when growing. On the contrary, the less often you perform it, the better the flowering will be. They think about a new pot only when it becomes crowded in the old roots. The new container should be only 1-2 cm larger than the previous one.

The main requirement for the substrate is permeability. Perfect soil for cacti and succulents. You can cook it yourself. The components are:

  • 1 part of leaf land;
  • 4 parts of sod land;
  • 1 part coarse sand;
  • 1 part old mullein.

A layer of expanded clay, polystyrene or shards is placed at the bottom to ensure good drainage.

Flowering initiation

To see how the love tree blooms, you need to properly care for it throughout the year. Usually flowering begins in spring and lasts from a month to six months, depending on the species.

It is important to follow these recommendations when growing:

  • Need to provide a small pot. The more spacious the aichryson lives, the more actively it builds up the root system. This is a very energy-intensive process for a flower, so flowering will begin only when the entire earthen ball is braided with roots.
  • Seasonality in care. In order for buds to appear in spring, wintering in a cool room and poor watering during the cold season are definitely needed.
  • Timely pruning. After flowering, faded flower stalks must be immediately cut off, otherwise, the plant’s strength will be spent on the formation of seeds, and not on the development of buds in the next season.

If you follow these rules in growing, then the flowering of aichryson will be stormy and long.

Reproduction

The easiest way to get this flower at home is to buy it in a store. But many are interested in how aichryson can be propagated, because it is cheaper.

Reproduction of aichryson

There are several methods:

  • seeds;
  • cuttings.

Seeds

Seeds are sown in a mixture of sand and leafy soil, after which the container is covered with a film or glass to increase the humidity in the greenhouse. Once a day, seedlings need to be ventilated and periodically moistened with a spray bottle. The first seedlings hatch 2-2.5 weeks after sowing. When they form several true leaves, they dive with a distance of 1-2 cm from each other. After another 3 weeks, the seedlings are transplanted into separate cups.

Cuttings

Aichryson can be rooted from cuttings, which are always enough after pruning, and this propagation method is very simple. Immediately after cutting, they are placed in a dry room for a couple of hours to dry the cut points. Then they are planted in a mixture of soil, vermiculite and sand. After a couple of weeks, you can understand whether the procedure was successful. The indicator will be new leaves that have appeared.
