Can You Paint Over Non-Woven Wallpaper

Often, wall decoration with wallpaper is boring and you really want to change it. It is always troublesome and costly to re-glue panels, so many abandon their plans. But you can repaint them. True, there are many nuances of this process. Let’s talk about whether it is possible to paint non-woven wallpaper , how and how to do it correctly.

Features of non-woven wall decor

Decorative stripes are made of non-woven fabric. It is formed from natural cellulose fibers that are woven into a durable fabric. To give it even greater strength, impregnations and fiber additives from polymers are used. The fabric made in this way becomes the basis for decoration. Another layer is applied to it and embossing is carried out. The result is an embossed or smooth finishing canvas.

Different materials are applied to the cellulose substrate. If it is non-woven, you get a durable finish that is easy to glue. One of its advantages is the possibility of repainting. Wallpaper is produced specially for painting . Such markings are necessarily present on their packaging. These are canvases of white or light yellow color with a pattern or smooth. After gluing, they are painted. As a rule, the material can withstand 8-10 painting cycles.

Features of non-woven wall decor

Painted non-woven fabrics are also produced. They do not require additional finishing after gluing, but, if necessary, they can always be repainted. If paper or vinyl is applied to the non-woven backing, repainting is not possible. The exception is foamed vinyl. In this state, the waterproof polymer is able to absorb the coloring liquid. It penetrates into numerous pores. Whereas vinyl silk-screen printing, “superwash”, etc. the pores are closed by embossing. It will not work to paint them qualitatively.

Another important point of high-quality staining is the correct gluing of the stripes. For this, special glue must be used . It is a formulation for heavy webs with appropriate additives. The mixture is applied only to the wall, the finish is applied to it and gently straightened. Bubbles, loose edges and similar imperfections are immediately bonded.

The choice of paint for non-woven wallpaper

Non-woven fabric is sensitive to organic solvents. They dissolve cellulose fibers. Therefore, they should not be in the coloring composition. Water-dispersion mixtures are chosen for painting. Water becomes the main one for them, so the division within this group is rather arbitrary. In any case, these are thick mixtures that include various components. The latter determine their properties. Let’s list the paints suitable for the job.

Acrylic

It contains polyacrylates that help to form a protective film on the painted surface. It is breathable, which allows the surface to breathe and also prevents the appearance of microorganisms. The film is moisture resistant, so it is not afraid of dampness and is well cleaned, easily tolerates wet cleaning. Acrylic paints are non-toxic, dry quickly, and are resistant to mechanical damage. They are used to decorate any premises, including children’s rooms.

Latex

Latex particles (also called rubber) are dissolved in the material. This gives the preparation elasticity, which is important when painting embossed surfaces. In addition, the water resistance of the coating increases. Often the latex mixture is chosen for application in rooms with high humidity: toilets, bathrooms, showers. Walls covered with latex paint are easy to clean, abrasion resistant, and the coating helps to hide minor imperfections in the substrate. The surfaces “breathe”, dry quickly, and are not toxic. Latex particles make the surface silky, so they look attractive.

Latex

Polyvinyl acetate

It contains polyvinyl acetate. This gives the material strength, but at the same time makes the surface vulnerable to moisture. For this reason, their use is limited. Neither in the bathroom nor in the kitchen they can be painted.

Sometimes water-based mixtures are confused with water-dispersion mixtures. They are really very similar in their characteristics. They also have the same basis – water.

Water emulsion

Water – based formulations differ depending on the filling. They can be silicone, acrylic, silicate, mineral.

If you need to choose how to paint non-woven wallpaper for painting, all varieties will do. They are also used for painting canvases with a pattern. The only caveat is that the mineral water emulsion is not resistant to moisture. It is used only in dry rooms. The common advantage of all water-based products is the possibility of tinting. If there is no suitable shade on sale, you can make it yourself by adding a color scheme.

Tools for work

Having decided whether it is possible to paint non-woven  wallpaper , and by what means to do it, prepare the tools. The best result will be given by a spray gun or, as it is also called, a spray gun. Its use allows you to get an even coating without the slightest defects. Professional pneumatic devices are expensive and massive. A compact household version with an electric motor is suitable for home.

A roller is used to apply the coloring agent. For smooth fabrics, choose a fur coat with a short nap, for textured ones – with a long one. Masters recommend in any case to take sheepskin or velor. They do not leave clots, streaks or air bubbles. Use a brush to paint over hard-to-reach areas. You can paint the entire surface with it, but it is very difficult to do this evenly. Stripes almost always remain. Therefore, only hard-to-reach and small fragments are painted over with a brush.

Technology of painting non-woven wallpaper with a roller

It is quite simple, but it needs to follow the instructions exactly to get a good result. Let’s figure out how to do everything right.

Surface preparation

Start by working with the foundation. First, it is carefully examined, all defects are noted. These can be panels swollen with bubbles, peeled corners and edges. All this needs to be corrected. The unstuck fragments are glued in place. Bubbles pierce, release air. If the swollen area is close to the edge, it is carefully lifted, coated with glue and pressed against the wall.

If the bubble is located in the middle of the strip, glue is collected into a syringe, injected under the non-woven fabric, carefully distributed and glued. Only a special adhesive is used. Otherwise, after staining, the defects will appear again. Allow to dry well. You can paint the strips no earlier than a day after gluing.

The dried surface is cleaned of dust and dirt. This can be done with a dry cloth, broom or brush, but best of all with a vacuum cleaner. In order not to damage the decor, the power of the device is reduced. The cleaned base is degreased. To do this, prepare a soapy solution, moisten a rag or sponge in it, squeeze and wipe the plane, not missing a single fragment. Then give time to dry.

The next stage is priming . The primer will improve the adhesion of the base to the dye mixture and reduce its consumption. It is important to choose the right primer. It must be suitable for non-woven use. The primer is applied with a roller or a brush in one or two layers. Allow the preparation to dry completely. After that, the baseboards are sealed with masking tape.

First, carefully read the recommendations on the paint packaging . It should describe in detail how to prepare the drug for work and how to apply it correctly. After finishing all the preparations, they begin coloring. Here are step-by-step instructions on how to paint non-woven wallpaper not for painting with a roller.

  1. Pour the coloring preparation into the tray. We lower the roller into it and scroll it several times.
  2. Slightly squeeze out the liquid by running the tool across the platform on the tray.
  3. We press the roller against the wall, carefully roll it several times. It is best to paint from top to bottom to avoid sagging. But the opposite is also possible. The coloring mixture is applied evenly, drips are immediately removed.
  4. We consistently paint over the entire surface with a roller.
  5. We take a brush and paint hard-to-reach areas with it.

One coat will not give an even finish. The coloring agent should be applied in two or three layers, but only on the dried coating.

Bubbles sometimes appear on the painted stripes. Getting rid of them is pretty easy. It is best to do this while the base is still wet. The bubble is pierced with a needle, the air is gently released from it, the trim is pressed against the wall.

If you need to paint a dark panel with a pattern in a light color, it is advisable to carry out preparatory work. Otherwise, dark spots will appear after drying. To prevent this from happening, the base is painted over with white paint. On top of it, a mixture of the selected tone is applied in at least two layers. For dark staining, such preparation is not required.

We figured out whether it is possible to paint non-woven wallpaper with and without a pattern. Figured out how to do it right. The technology is available to the most inexperienced craftsman and is not at all complicated. It is only important to choose the right tools and materials. If everything is done according to the instructions, the result will definitely please. However, you can improve it. For example, apply a repeating print using a stencil, emphasize the relief of the canvas with a darker or lighter tone, or even paint a fragment of a wall.
