Parquet is renowned for its durability and also its complex relationship with water. What to do if the parquet swelling, we will tell you in our instructions.
Parquet is not only very durable, but also environmentally friendly. In matters of reliability, he has no equal: you have probably been in old apartments where the original floor has been preserved. Of course, you need to regularly look after the parquet and make sure that it is not damaged – only under this condition will it serve you for a long time. One of the main reasons for replacing a floor is contact with water. If this happened to you, do not despair, because everything can be restored.
1. Find the cause and fix it
In general, she is one – water. This can be flooding from neighbors, spilled liquid, or improper flooring when a water seal is not installed. Alternatively, the air in the room may be too humid, especially for a coating laid near the bathroom . The wood absorbed excess liquid from the air and the parquet floor was swollen. Normal air humidity should be in the range of 40-50%, you can check this using a special device – a hygrometer.
2. Determine the scale of the defeat
The choice of the restoration option depends on the amount of damaged coating. If only a few planks are soaked, a spot reconstruction of the parquet is quite suitable. And if there is more damage, it makes sense to replace the entire coating.
3. Remove the damaged parts
If your method is to repair the floor locally, then the first thing you need to do is remove any damaged planks. They are carefully pulled out of the holes, and the rest of the coating is properly dried. You can pull out the parquet particles with the help of a chisel, insert it into the gap between the planks and gently pry off a part, then lift the entire block. You can dry the floors by increasing the temperature in the room by a few degrees. But do not overdo it and do not bring it to the heat, a sharp jump in temperature will dry out the parquet.
4. Clean the place of repair from debris and dust
Dust and dirt always accumulate under the parquet, besides, after each treatment, oil, old glue and grout particles remain between the floor and the floor. Therefore, before laying a new coating, you must carefully remove the debris. This stage cannot be neglected, it is not only not hygienic, but it can also interfere with a more snug fit of the strips. The ideal assistant in this matter is an ordinary vacuum cleaner .
5. Supply new parts
When the floor is dry and clean, new parts can be installed. If you have an old set of parquet , take a replacement from there. If not, you will have to re-select the boards. If you put several adjacent strips at once, then glue them together and only then install, it’s easier. It is more convenient to fit the planks to each other in size using a planer. You can fix the parts in place with self-tapping screws or liquid nails if the base is concrete.
6. Treat the surface
After the coating has been restored, it is time to sand it. The wood layer is removed only along the grain. After the completion of the work, the renovated parquet is covered with varnish or oil . Roll the protective coating over the surface better, it should firmly adhere to the wood. If you have experience with wood flooring, you can immediately apply one thick coat, and if you are a beginner, it is better to walk several times, but put a thin coat of varnish.
