A tree as a floor covering can withstand several tens, or even hundreds of years, if the manufacturers did not save on quality, and the owners did not forget about leaving. But what if the parquet squeaky? Here’s how to get rid of this quiet but very annoying sound.
Why does old parquet squeaky
Parquet has a lot of advantages over other coatings: laminate, linoleum . You have to pay for them with unnecessary noise in the house. Wooden dies with which the surface is paved do not contain any chemical compounds, which means they suffer greatly from time. The particles are detached from the concrete base that holds them together and begin to change shape. As a result, when you step, the parts rub against each other, and a squeak appears. If the coating is new, then, most likely, we are talking about the wrong microclimate in the room: excessive humidity and dry air. On the one hand, the tree dries, on the other, it gets soaked. All this leads to deformation and unpleasant sounds.
Other causes of squeaking
- Mechanical damage to the coating.
- Looseness of fasteners.
- Failure to comply with the laying technique.
How to repair squeaky parquet
First you need to understand which section is not in order. Remember the places where squeaky heard , for convenience you can mark them somehow. It is from these areas that you begin recovery. Sometimes it is not necessary to change the entire coating, but if you have the opportunity, this method will help once and for all (or for some time) to solve the problem of extraneous sounds when walking.
1. Total dismantling
If the parquet is held together, the obvious way to fix the problem is to dismantle the entire base. First you need to do the analysis: all the strips are taken out one by one. Then the base is renewed: the damaged places are restored, the entire surface is leveled, and only after that you can start laying out the new parquet . Remember to remove all trash before doing this. The disadvantage of this method is in its scale, as it takes a lot of time and money. Therefore, if, for example, only one area creaks, it makes sense to consider a partial recovery.
2. Putty cracks
Dry air in a room is not the best friend of all wooden objects, including wood trim. Over time, from a lack of moisture, the wood dries up, cracks form, and is disturbed by the density of the coating. You can restore it if you putty the holes with a color mixture. After such work, the entire surface is sanded and varnished.
3. Pouring a new base
If you don’t notice any deformed planks, then a damaged base may be the cause of the squeak. To find out, you will have to remove the top wood layer. If defects appear in the concrete screed , you can re- fill it, but then access to the room will be limited, or do it easier – cover the concrete with sheets of plywood. This method is less durable than the first one, but it is faster, easier and saves you noise for a long time.
4. Driving in spacers
If the air temperature and humidity in your apartment change their indicators every now and then, the floor may well dry out and start making unpleasant sounds. How to prevent parquet from squeaking? For this, the contact points must be eliminated. Small wedges will help move parts of the wood planks away from each other a little and thus stop rubbing. Using a hammer, they must be carefully hammered into the crevices between the boards. Instead of wedges, you can try pouring talcum powder into the cracks, it’s faster.
5. Filling with glue
The glue acts as a bonding base component. To pour it inside, markings are drawn on the damaged areas – points every 15 centimeters from each other. From above, these marks are sealed with construction tape. Later, you will drill holes here and fill in the adhesive. Do not forget to remove any traces of work with solvent (test it first on a small area). About an hour after pouring, something heavy will need to be placed on the surface so that the top layer snuggles against the base. In a day, it will be possible to walk on the floor without squeaking.
6. Pouring cement
This method is somewhat similar to the previous one: a two-centimeter hole is made next to the damaged part, where a composition of cement and bitumen is poured . The composition will serve as a support for the damaged bar. After that, the hole is closed with a piece of wood to match and varnished. You can make holes with a smaller diameter: they are easier to mask, but more difficult to work with.
7. Douching with grease
This method is convenient in that the holes to be made in the floor are minimal and completely invisible. You will need a special construction syringe. A special composition of wax and solvent is poured into small holes with a syringe. It lubricates damaged areas, prevents friction and eliminates squeaking.
There is a small space between the top layer of wood and the floor. Usually it is about 9 centimeters. So that the floor does not walk and there is no squeak, this void can be filled with construction foam . It will serve as a support for the planks, and will not let them loosen completely. The downside is that the density of the foam is low, and over time it will sag under the influence of the weight of those who walk on the floor, which means there is a great risk that it will creak again.
9. Installation of self-tapping screws
Works great if the wood squeaky from the friction of the log and parquet details. It will be necessary to find a lag – this is one of the longitudinal boards on which the covering was laid. Check for pipes or wires under the damaged area of the floor, then start drilling holes through the top cover into the log. They need to screw in self-tapping screws (as an option, they also use nails, but they are less reliable), drowning them deeper so that there are no irregularities.
10. New commit
One of the most budgetary, but very time-consuming ways to renovate a floor. First you need to check the planks and logs. To do this, you need to sort through the entire parquet. If you find damage or defects, then you need to fix them or replace them with new parts. By the way, it is for this case that you should save a little of the old parquet set in order to replace the particles with the same color and texture without any problems. If you have no stock left, you will have to go to the store with a damaged bar and select the most suitable one.
After all the damaged parts are replaced, proceed to fixing the screws, they will pull the floor to the required level, and also get rid of the squeak that is usually formed at the point where the nail and the bar touch. This comes from the proximity of two different materials – wood and metal. Due to corrosion, the metal becomes thinner, and a gap forms between it and the tree, which as a result makes unpleasant sounds when walking. After screed the floor, the renewed coating is sanded and varnished.
How to avoid damage
It is obvious that damage to the floor is easier to prevent than to renovate later. Even the old Soviet parquet will delight you and your household if it is properly cared for. To prevent the parquet from crunching, you need to take care of it regularly and not save on materials.
Rely on the toughest woods: cherry, oak, teak, maple. Such a floor will serve you for many decades, it does not matter whether it is panel board or type-setting, but only if it is processed in a timely manner. Attach the planks with special parquet glue. If you do not have sufficient knowledge and experience in construction, it is better to entrust the installation to a team of professional finishers . Yes, you will have to spend money on work, but you will be sure that you do not spoil the material with wrong actions. All work depends on the level of professionalism.
After editing, do not relax. Yes, most of the dirty work has already been done, the floor pleases with an updated look, but it regularly needs special care. First of all, it is a comfortable indoor climate – not too hot and not too humid air – the temperature is within 20 degrees, and the humidity is about 40 percent. From a medical point of view, these are ideal conditions for human immunity , so if you are used to dry, hot air, it makes sense to reconfigure, it will benefit both you and your repair. Stock up on wax and other wood care products. The varnish needs to be renewed every few years. If all conditions are met, the parquet will look great for a very long time.
