Varnish paint (or varnish) is one of the most common types of paints used when painting wood. The varnish is a thin glossy insulating film that decorates, restores and protects the item, it is made of cellulose, gum and shellac. There are various types of varnish, of which:
Parquet varnish – protects the material from dents, darkening and scratches.
Varnish for interior use – ideal for finishing any wooden surfaces except the floor.
Shellac – perfect for restoration of furniture lacquers and staining of various wooden coatings.
In this article, we will also learn how to use wood varnish in a simple and understandable way.
How to paint varnish on wood?
This will require the following materials:
- Plain brush.
- Varnish paint.
- Varnished wood primer
- Latex gloves.
- Glasses for eye protection.
Do not use expired varnish!
Before starting work, you should read the instructions. The varnish is flammable (do not work near sources of fire!). Work with varnish should be in goggles and gloves. To open the can, you need to pry the edge of the lid with a screwdriver or other pointed tool. Stir the varnish before use and use a brush during operation. The varnish dries 3-4 hours. After use, close the can and ventilate the room.
Preparation for the painting process
First, prepare a suitable place for the varnish, you need to place a piece of fabric or plastic under the piece to be painted. You also need to choose a place with good ventilation, due to the harmful smell of varnish.
For internal work, it is recommended to use water-based varnish, since it is easier to work with it in unprepared conditions. If you plan to use a wooden product on the street, it is recommended to use acrylic varnish, as it contains elements that protect the material from ultraviolet radiation.
Sand the surface of the painted wood with sandpaper or use a grinder to facilitate and speed up the process. Make sure you grind in the direction of the wood fibers, and not perpendicular to them. Start with coarse sanding paper (number 150 or 180) and then switch to less coarse sanding paper with less roughness.
If there are openings on a wooden surface, they should be filled with wooden paste of the same color or close to the tree, and it should be suitable for varnish paint.
Finally, wipe the wood with a damp cloth and let it dry a little.
Paint a wood with varnish
If necessary, paint the wood with a primer, it should correspond to the type of varnish used. If the wooden surface is rough, you may need to apply more than one coat of paint. Make sure the direction of the paint is uniform, not random.
After that, after painting the wood with varnish, you can use the paint, which comes in the form of a spray, as it is easier to deal with (carefully read the instructions on the spray can before use). Or it can be in the form of liquid paint, and you need to apply it with a regular brush. Put a little varnish on the tip of the brush and distribute it evenly over the entire surface of the tree. Very often, when working with varnish, many have the same problem: the pile falls off the brush and remains on the work surface, which is not very beautiful when dried. To avoid this, use a dishwashing sponge to remove excess particles after applying varnish to the surface.
You may also need to sand the surface after varnishing, depending on the situation. Grinding does not begin until the first coat dries for at least 24 hours, after grinding, wipe the surface and clean it, and then apply another coat of varnish.
After adding the last layer, allow the wood surface to dry for 48 hours.
Finally, wipe the wood with wax for added protection and add a pleasant sheen.
