Linoleum is a very strong material, however, with strong mechanical stress, it can also be damaged. It always happens unexpectedly: during the renovation process, when placing new furniture, or even because of mistakes made during installation. Another common reason is the wrong type of coverage. Today we will tell you how to close a hole in linoleum and prevent it from appearing.
How to repair without a patch
With the help of a special composition
Scuffs, scratches or a small hole do not need to be sealed: they can be repaired with a special mastic or putty . It comes in the form of a paste or pencil and is sold in almost every hardware store. If you failed to buy it, you should not despair: such a repair composition is easy to do with your own hands. This will require materials such as rosin, castor oil, coloring pigment, and alcohol denatured alcohol.
First, melt a pound of rosin: put it in a porcelain bowl, which you have previously set over a pot of boiling water. As soon as the substance melts, remove the dishes from the boiling water and set to cool. Until the rosin is frozen again, add 100 g of castor oil and 150 g of denatured alcohol to it.
The pigment, which is produced in the form of a powder as an additive to paints and varnishes, must be selected in advance: its color should not differ much from the color of the canvas. It should be remembered that after drying, the homemade putty will become lighter.
Mix all three components, and then cover the damaged area with the finished composition. After it dries, sand the renewed surface with fine-grained sandpaper. As you can see, even for an inexperienced master, the described method will not be difficult. Having mastered it, you will understand how to quickly repair a hole in linoleum without a patch.
Damage in the form of torn pieces or cuts is no less easy to repair at home. If the problem area is a protruding “tongue”, then, first of all, clean the base underneath from dirt and dust. Then fill the hole with a thin layer of floor adhesive. It can be universal PVA glue, silicone sealant or liquid nails.
With double-sided tape
This method is suitable if the coating has parted at the junction or a long cut was found on it.
Fold the edges in different directions. Vacuum the opened base thoroughly. Apply a primer to the cleaned surface and leave to dry.
After making sure that the base is dry, unwind the tape of the required length from the spool of tape and glue it into the gap. Remove the protective film from its outer side, and then gently glue the raised edges of the material to the tape. Using a rubber roller, flatten the seam so that it is not visible.
How to seal a hole in linoleum with a patch
It’s good if after laying there are a few unnecessary pieces left: they will make wonderful patches. But how to patch a damaged canvas if all the material has been used up? In this case, remove the skirting board and cut out the strip of covering that was under it. If the damage is so large that this is not enough, you will have to go to the store, asking the sellers for trims of the desired color.
So, let’s start repairing. Take a small piece of cardboard and use scissors to make a triangle or square template of the same size as the damaged area. Place it on a spare cover sheet.
Armed with a sharp edging knife, cut the patch along the contours of the cardboard, but in such a way that it is slightly larger than the pattern itself. Glue a piece of double-sided tape to the back of it and fix it directly on the hole.
Take the knife again. Now you need to cut so that the tool blade goes through a double layer of material: simultaneously through the patch and along the edges of the problem area. The result should be such a workpiece that fits exactly into the hole. Clean the base from dust, apply PVA glue on it and glue the cut out patch to the floor.
It is always easier to prevent than to fix it: when using linoleum , try not to expose it to loads for which it is not intended.
This defect is not damage, but if it is not eliminated in time, a hole or at least a scratch will certainly appear. For example, someone touches such a “wave” with a sofa leg, moving it around the room, and as a result, the canvas will break.
First, remove all skirting boards. Try to stretch the cover so that the bulge spreads. If there is nowhere to stretch further, trim the ends and try to stretch the material again. As soon as the “wave” disperses, in the place where it was, glue the product to the floor, and then fix it under the skirting boards.
With this method, it is easy to remove small bumps that have appeared due to improper styling . If the bubbles appeared due to the fact that the coating was simply stretched, you need to act differently.
Pierce the center of the bladder with a thick needle or awl, release the air and smooth out the problem area with your hands. In this case, it will immediately be seen how much stretched material must be removed in order for the canvas to acquire its original appearance.
Using a razor blade or an assembly knife, make a cut, cut out excess, and reattach the edges. If they come together without bulging, the issue is resolved.
Fill the seam with liquid nails or PVA and cold weld the edges. Place a press on top (for example, a book with dumbbells) and wait until everything is dry.
In order not to think about how to seal the hole in the linoleum at home later, follow these recommendations.
- Do not walk on the floor in heels. Imagine a situation: about to leave the house, the owner of the apartment, having dressed and put on shoes, suddenly realizes that she forgot her phone. I no longer want to take off her shoes, so she returns to the room on high heels. The heels fit easily into the soft polymer layer, leaving noticeable dents and sometimes small holes.
- Move furniture gently. The legs scratch the floor with a creak, resulting in a long gap. If you cannot do without rearrangement, stick pieces of felt or special pads on the legs. By the way, this is a good way to avoid dents that appear if cabinets and sofas have been in the same place for a long time.
- Do not work with tools on bare floors. Many of us love to work with our hands, using a different tool. However, turning a bedroom or living room into a workshop is not a good idea. If you make a mistake, there is already a hole on the floor from a drill or a soldering iron.
- Be careful with matches and coals. The coating deteriorates very quickly from contact with cigarette ash or charcoal dropped from the hookah. The most dangerous, of course, is coal: because of it, not just a black spot, but a large hole can appear, not to mention the risk of fire.
- Do not use the blade on an uneven surface. High-quality laying of the material implies the presence of an absolutely flat surface. If there are potholes or differences in height on it, then before putting the finishing finish, eliminate the defects. Otherwise, scuffs will very quickly appear in these places, and then holes.
Criteria for choosing strong linoleum
If you want to buy a truly reliable product that will last more than a dozen years, pay attention to two main criteria when buying.
Wear resistance level
To understand how resistant the coating is to abrasion, a special marking in the form of numbers indicating the class of material will help. So, for a bedroom and an office, a canvas of class 21 is suitable. For a nursery or living room, in which the load on the floor is slightly higher (children run, guests come), it makes sense to purchase a 22nd class cover. And for the corridor, where not only residents, but also visitors who come to them, constantly trample, 23 class will be needed.
It is quite another matter if we are not talking about residential premises, but about public buildings. This can be a school, office center or other institution where a large number of people are constantly located. They will already require commercial grade material – 32-34.
If friends and neighbors constantly come to your home, then it is advisable to lay a canvas with a wear resistance level of 31-32 in the corridor and in the kitchen. And if you also have a large family, then it is better to immediately take the model marked 33. You will definitely not be mistaken.
The strength of the product also depends on the base with which it was made. Stamps made on the basis of felt or jute are warm and natural. But, unfortunately, they do not possess high strength. Linoleum made of polyester or polyvinyl chloride (PVC) is much stronger. However, the record for durability is a coating on a mixed basis, which includes both of these components: PVC and polyester.
