Indoor lemon

In order not to be bored on long winter evenings, get an indoor lemon! It will fill your home with joy, a wonderful smell of flowers, and the taste of picked fruits can not be compared with the purchased ones. Europeans decorated their houses and terraces with beautiful lemon and tangerine trees for a long time. In combination with myrtle, olive and citrus, they give the apartment a Mediterranean style.

Types of indoor lemon

There are so many varieties of lemon. They differ in the height of the tree, the size and shape of the leaves, and, of course, the fruits. For our premises, it is desirable to choose low-growing or medium-sized varieties, so that they can be formed without damage into a beautiful compact tree. It is also important that the plant withstands the dry air of our apartments during the heating period, which lasts almost six months.

Why, for example, can’t our beautiful citrus fruits brought from the south withstand our winters? Yes, because in the south they grow in the open ground and overwinter at + 5 … + 7 °C. We cannot provide such conditions, cool wintering on our windows. And yet, southern lemons are grafted on the wild lemon Trifoliate, for the room such a rootstock is not suitable.

I want to talk about the best, in my opinion, varieties for keeping in a city apartment on the southern or eastern window. These are Meyer’s lemon, Jubilee and Novogruzinsky.
Meyer’s lemon, or Chinese dwarf, is characterized by small growth (it can be formed at a height of 60-70 cm), an abundance of small fruits (up to 130 g) of golden-orange color with a thin skin, which can be eaten even without sugar. In 2008, we removed 37 fruits from one Meyer lemon per season.

Lemon Novogruzinsky has the most fragrant leaves, flowers and fruits. The height of an adult tree can be from 80 cm to 1.5 m – as far as the area allows. Fruits of oval shape, with a spout, weighing 120-130 g, very fragrant, contain the maximum amount of vitamin C for a lemon. We call this lemon “the gift of Georgia”, for tea it is unsurpassed in taste and aroma!

Lemon Jubilee is the most unpretentious and stunning in beauty and abundance of flowers variety. It has the largest leaves compared to other varieties – leathery, dark green. The height of the tree is on average 80-120 cm. Blooms in clusters – 10-12 flowers in the inflorescence, the flowers are very large, beautiful, up to 5 cm in diameter, the whole bush is literally strewn with flowers – a stunning sight. The fruits are large, weighing up to 300-500 g, oval or round in shape. This lemon does not need to be formed, it is shade-tolerant, it tolerates the dry air of the apartment very well. We can say that this is an ideal variety for beginners and very busy people.

How to grow indoor lemon

To plant lemons, you need to use pots of 3-4 liters, preferably made of plastic. It is impossible to plant in a large pot since the plant will chew. Transplant a lemon into new earth once a year in a dish slightly larger than the previous one – 3-5 cm higher and wider. For lemons, I use purchased soil “Lemon” or make a mixture of turf earth from under deciduous trees and purchased soil in a ratio of 1: 1. One of the common mistakes when growing citrus fruits is excessive watering in the winter.

Lemons are watered in winter 1 time in 7 days, abundantly, in summer – 1 time in 3 days. You can spray daily. As a top dressing, I use Agricola fertilizer for beautifully flowering plants in sticks. When planting, I put 7 sticks of fertilizer in the pot and every 2 months I add 3 sticks.

Everyone can grow and always have their own lemons, and this is not a myth, but a reality.
Lemons are very durable plants. I’ve seen fruit-strewn trees that were over 30 years old.
