For the manufacture of metal profiles, the method of hot or cold deformation, welding, as well as a combined method are used.
The pipe may be cold formed or hot formed. To obtain the desired shapes / sizes, the workpieces pass through a special molding machine. Hot deformation is characterized in that it involves the application of pressure at high temperature. Products are made from low carbon, low alloy, as well as galvanized steel. Stainless steel and copper alloys are resistant to corrosion, but their price is an order of magnitude higher.
Welding technology includes three main stages:
- Sheets of metal pass through the conveyor, where they are checked for defects.
- Cutting into tapes, which will be further welded to each other by electric welding with high-frequency currents.
- The last stage is cooling by emulsion formulations.
With the combined method, pipes are made as follows:
- Strips (blanks) are made from steel sheets.
- To obtain the desired size, the workpiece is joined by welding metal.
- On the molding mill, a product of the desired section with stiffeners is formed from a strip.
Finished products undergo multi-stage quality control and compliance testing.
Types of profile pipes
Profiled pipes differ in section shape. In addition to the typical rectangle, square, oval, non-standard figures are issued – a triangle, a polygon, a star.
The square shape allows you to maintain structural stability and withstand significant loads. Such a pipe is easy to transport and assemble. This is a universal material for widespread use: reinforcing the wall framework, the device of ceilings where rigidity and strength are required from the structure.
According to the strength characteristics, a rectangular metal profile is not inferior to a square one. It is used in cases where it is necessary to reduce the weight of the structure without losing the main operational characteristics.
Profiled pipes with an oval cross section are used as a decorative element. For example, for the device of metal fences, awnings, arbors. Oval products are distinguished by a small wall thickness – from 0.5 mm to 1.2 mm.
Another type of professional pipe is furniture. Due to the thinner walls, it is lightweight, easy to assemble, durable, but not able to withstand increased loads. It also has a small size range: from 10×10 mm to 30×30 mm for a square and from 20×10 mm to 40×25 mm for a rectangular pipe.

Strength, the ability to withstand loads and the weight of any shaped pipe, regardless of its size, are determined by the wall thickness. So, for cold and hot rolling, these parameters are 1-8 mm and 4-14 mm, respectively. For pipes made by welding, up to 5 mm.
To easily determine the characteristics of the profile, the manufacturer applies a marking along its entire length indicating:
- chemical composition of the alloy.
Scope of application of profile pipes
These products are widely used in the construction industry, mechanical engineering, industry, and agriculture. Due to the variety of their shapes, strength and immunity to aggressive environments, which provides high wear resistance, you can create any structures – building frames, awnings, greenhouses, arbors.
Rectangular profile pipes can replace corners, channels, timber without loss of structural strength. Moreover, they have much lower weight and lower price. In mechanical engineering, the profile is used for the manufacture of parts used in the construction of heavy equipment. Stairs, public transport stops, window frames, ventilation systems, warehouse equipment – this is not a complete list of the areas of application of the metal profile.
Advantages and disadvantages of products
Of the advantages of a trade union pipe, it is worth highlighting:
- ease of installation;
- low price;
- large margin of safety;
- resistance to adverse climatic conditions;
- ease of use and a variety of cross-sectional shapes;
- relatively light weight.
The main disadvantage of products is the problem of bending. With your own hands, without special devices, it is difficult to deform correctly and not spoil the workpiece. Ferrous metal products have one more drawback – the risk of corrosion.
Profile selection criteria – shape, dimensions, metal thickness, type of alloy. Square or rectangular stainless steel products made by seamless pipe rolling are suitable for the construction of load-bearing structures. Their strength depends on the parameters: the greater the thickness / size, the higher the strength.
For the construction of structures with low weight profiles with thin walls are suitable. In furniture production and for decoration, chrome-plated pipes of various cross-sectional shapes, including oval, are used.
